City of London
The City of London, often referred to as the 'Square Mile', has two thousand years of history. It has had its own government since before the Norman Conquest.
Its customs were confirmed by William I in 1066 and have been reconfirmed by subsequent kings and queens. This long independence has given a unique form of government and its own customs and ceremonies.
The geographical limits of the City have changed slightly but they are still largely the area within the Roman walls and some adjacent areas, this is the extent of medieval London which would have been familiar to William Shakespeare. Its unique collection of buildings reflects both its history and its present role as home to one of the world's most dynamic and innovative financial centres.
The City is administered by the City of London Corporation and its first citizen is the Lord Mayor of the City of London.
